I thought it would be a little better than it was. There were a couple of marginal scenes, one about a cork and probing and another the aliens catch a glimpse of the naked astronauts’ … business … and comment on it being a strange place for an antenna. The cork comment made me a bit uneasy while sitting next to me 3, 6 & 9 year old, though the oldest was the only one to get it and she thought it was just gross.

I would have to say that over all the movie wasn’t too bad, but it is not one we will be adding to our family library. It was amusing in parts and over all I would call it fun.

The basis of the story is that an astronaut, Chuck – Dwayne Johnson, comes to a planet he thinks is uninhabited and finds an alien civilization in their 1950’s with diners, comic books and a huge fascination with space ships, the fox trot and bowling shirts. When Chuck lands that planet goes crazy trying to capture him. He is separated from his ship, which if it doesn’t return to the “mother ship” with in 72 hours he will be left stranded.

After several mishaps and being captured by the general he is rescued, makes friends with the aliens and saves Lem – Justin Longs character from total humiliation and social exile.

Stardust

This is a fun, adventurous, romantic film.  We here at anti-critic had a hard time understanding why so few people had seen this movie until we watched the trailer on our dvd.  The trailer for this movie did not do any justice to this film.

Stardust follows Tristan (Charlie Cox), a young man wanting to prove his love for a rather vapid young woman (Sienna Miller).  Tristan goes into the mythical kingdom of Stormhold to retrieve a fallen star for his love.  He finds out that a fallen star in Stomhold is actually a young woman. Yvaine (Claire Danes) is the name of the star.  Tristan also finds that a fallen star is a very valuable commodity.  He must contend with witches and wicked prince’s to keep Yvaine for himself.

The casting for the film is excellent.  Charlie Cox is charming as the awkward and insecure Tristan, (he is also one of the few men who look better with long hair, incidentally).  Claire Danes is very convincing as the “fallen star”.  But it is the supporting cast that really carries the movie.  Michelle Pfeiffer plays the perfectly horrible witch Lamia, she is great in this role, and the make-up department deserves kudo’s for actually making her look ugly through about half of the film.  Robert DeNiro is hilarious as a cross dressing pirate, Captain Shakespeare.   Also fabulous is Mark Strong who plays the wicked prince Septimus.

This is a most beautifully filmed movie, with sweeping landscapes and a beautiful score.  One of the more visually impressive scenes being when Septimus confronts his soothsayer on a beach dotted with large cubes of ice.  Also, an amazing sword fighting scene in which Lamia uses Septimus’ lifeless body to fight Tristan.  Stardust also has the distinction of having a semi-long chase/running scene that does not loose it’s excitement.  This happens as four different people are chasing down Yvaine to stop her from crossing out of Stormhold into the real world which would turn her into stone.

This is a fairly family friendly movie, mainly depending on how easily scared your children are as there are some intense scenes.  Overall this is just a fun imagninative story for everybody.
